Fota Wildlife Park Welcomes Adorable Red Panda Cubs 🐼

It’s been a busy summer of new arrivals at Fota! Only last week we told you about the birth of an adorable baby drill monkey and now there’s even more good news. Yesterday, Fota Wildlife Park announced the arrival of two precious red panda cubs!

Born to first-time mum Suzi and dad Grga, the cubs are part of an important European breeding programme aimed at protecting this endangered species. While they’re still keeping cosy in their nesting box, Fota’s Lead Ranger Julien Fonteneau expects them to start exploring soon, giving visitors the chance to spot them in person.

And the fun part? You and the kids can help name them! Submit your suggestions via the Fota Wildlife Park website for a chance to win one of two Conservation annual passes (worth €245 each).

Now I’ll stop talking and let you enjoy the real stars of the show, the photos of these adorable cubs!

Cork Heritage Open Day Turns 20: Explore the City's Hidden Gems!

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Cork Heritage Open Day, a celebration that's only grown stronger since its start as part of the European Capital of Culture in 2005. We’re thrilled to see familiar buildings like Cork’s YMCA and St Luke’s Church throwing open their doors, and a whole host of new treasures joining in, including the Cork Butter Museum (once the world's largest exchange!) and the historic Firemen’s Rest.

From exploring places usually off-limits like the Quaker Meeting House and Collins Barracks Military Museum, to guided tours of the Cork Opera House (170 years old, mind you!) and the Everyman, there’s something for everyone. Plus, for the little ones, there's a Victorian Classroom Experience and Roman soldier demonstrations!

Some events need booking, so you can check out the full schedule of events on the Cork City website.

Cork’s Biggest Food Week Continues 🍴

The city’s tastiest week of the year is in full swing with Cork on a Fork Fest kicking off yesterday. Whether you’re into chef demos, tasting trails, or long-table feasts, there’s something happening around every corner.

Today’s Events section at the bottom of the newsletter is packed with everything on the menu (see what I did there 🙂). If you’d prefer to see the full programme of the week in one place, you can find it on the Cork City Council website here.

Dunkettle Development Gets Go-Ahead: 550 New Homes Approved 🏘️

If it feels like housing developments are getting the green light every week lately, you’re not wrong - and Dunkettle is the latest on the list. An Coimisiún Pleanála has given the green light to O'Flynn Construction for a massive 550-home development near the Dunkettle Interchange.

The site, owned by the company since the early 2000s, received planning permission from Cork City Council back in April for this first phase. This first phase includes 394 houses (a mix of two, three and four bedroom units) and 156 apartments and duplexes (one and two bedroom), in 10 blocks ranging in height from two to six storeys. The plans also include a crèche for up to 144 children and a new greenway connection.

O'Flynn Construction has plans for a further 486 units in a second phase, comprising a mix of semi-detached and terraced houses, duplex and apartment units.

You can read more about the development here.
