Hold onto your shopping bags, Cork! Cork City Council has officially approved the €200m 'Mahon Point 2.0' development, which promises to inject new life into Munster’s largest retail complex.

This project will bring 251 new apartments, a significant office space for up to 580 workers, and civic plaza to the area. Expect a host of new retail outlets, including some 'bigger box' stores, and a much-needed multi-storey car park. While the council has attached 52 conditions, particularly around traffic management and ensuring the city centre remains vital, the project is poised to create over 1,500 permanent jobs and significantly boost the local economy. Over €795,000 from the 2026 Community Monuments Fund will support 12 projects across the county, including major grants for St Anne’s Church, Shandon (€129k), Elizabeth Fort (€86k), and Cloyne Round Tower (€130k). Amarenco, a renewable energy company, has awarded almost €100,000 to eight community projects in Cork. The funds, from their annual allocation for areas near their solar energy sites, will support initiatives like trail upgrades in Carrigaline, solar panels for Whitechurch National School, and new equipment for Ballyclough Community Association and Inniscarra GAA Club. Kinsale is getting a 57-unit development with apartments for singles and family homes, including better access and parking.
